Description: This literature review attempts to provide a brief overview of some of the most common segmentation techniques, and a comparison between them. It discusses the “Grab-Cut” technique, and reviews some some of the common matting techniques. The graph cut approaches to segmentation can be extended to 3-D data and can be used for segmenting 3-D volumes.Other segmentation techniques use either contour or edge segmentation to perform segmentation. The graph cut techniques use both contour and edge information. The main matting techniques are Poisson matting and probabilistic alpha matting using colour statistics. Poisson matting works directly on the alpha matte of the image, and is interactive. The statisticalapproach uses Gaussians to model colour statistics in the image and is not interactive.

Description: In this project, we intend to segment natural images by combing colour and texture information. For this we will be using an unsupervised image segmentation framework (referred to as CTex) that is based on the adaptive inclusion of color and texture in the process of data partition. It is new formulation for the extraction of color features that will evaluate the input image in a multispace color representation. To achieve this, we will be using the opponent characteristics of the RGB and YIQ color spaces where the key component will be the inclusion of the Self Organizing Map (SOM) network in the computation of the dominant colors and estimation of the optimal number of clusters in the image. The texture features will be computed using a multichannel texture decomposition scheme based on Gabor filtering.

Description: Shadow detection and removal is an important task when dealing with colour outdoor images. Shadows are generated by a local and relative absence of light. Shadows are, first of all, a local decrease in the amount of light that reaches a surface. Secondly, they are a local change in the amount of light rejected by a surface toward the observer. Most shadow detection and segmentation methods are based on image analysis. However, some factors will affect the detection result due to the complexity of the circumstances, like water and a low intensity roof because of the special material as they are easy mistaken as shadows. In this paper we present a hypothesis test to detect shadows from the images and then energy function concept is used to remove the shadow from the image.
